Pleased to say that the "night club" incident of the prior evening was not repeated last night! I did have my earplugs ready but didn't need to use them and got a good nights sleep.
But I woke up early and decided to talk a walk to an ATM to refill my "local cash" pocket. Went to the beach boardwalk (about 2 blocks away from apartment) and walked a little more than a mile until I came
across an ATM and got some dong.
On my walk back, in about a block from the boardwalk, I saw what looked like a random "castle" that was quite out of place with the rest of the construction. It reminded me of a B-grade (or worse) movie
from the past called "Krull" that had a flying castle of similar weird design. I think it was some type of "mud bath" facility, but I wasn't going to go anywhere near that here! But here's some photos of it:
I eventually came to a cross street where the good fruit stand was located. Right next to the stand there was a Bahn Mi cart, so I ordered a nice breakfast Bahn Mi from the lady to eat on my way back to
the apartment. I also purchased some lilliqoi (passionfuit) and some rambutan from the fruit lady vendor.
Breakfast Bahn Mi -- had a nice fried egg in it.
starting my way through it...
Egg, "hot dog" something, coriander, cucumber, pate, chili paste, mayo/egg paste, etc... Yum!
Once back home I reached out to Bob and Shirley, who were just waking up around 9am. We decided that today we'd take it easy on the food and do some additional walking to prep for our big
"fancy" dinner at "Nen Restaurant" this evening.
So we started out around 9:30am with Shirley making a quick stop for a few "togo" croissants from the local bakery while Bob and I walked to another coffee shop they liked and grabbed a table.
I ordered another Saigon Coffee with condensed milk, which is basically a shot of expresso with sweetened condensed milk at the bottom while Bob ordered two Latte's for him and Shirley.
When Shirley showed up we had these with the bakery croissants:
We then walked quite a ways towards a local "market" -- more of a warehouse district housing a traditional open-air market of random vendors and stalls. It was a bit overwhelming, but had some
interesting items and things to see -- none of which I was interested in buying though.
veggies
more veggies and fruit and chillies
more more veggies
and even more greens...
hanging meat/pork products
dangling fish product...
video outside -- check out snakes and frogs!
I was getting "over stimulated" by the market (and was pretty buzzed from the expresso/saigon coffee) so we diverted to a very nice quiet alleyway which Bob and Shirley knew about that housed a really
mellow fruit juice/smoothie restaurant. Very relaxing and wonderful. They both ordered a mint and honey smoothy while I ordered a fresh passionfruit and pineapple smoothy while we sat in a nice
cool and quiet zone to recover form the madness of the market place.
mint + honey drink for Bob
same for Shirley
PassionFruit + Pineapple for John
Just next to the juice place there was a house with a cat that had amazing blue eyes--- it also apparently had its own scooter!
We then walked back to the local restaurant Ms N's to have a lunch -- basically a repeat of dinner from Monday night as it was so good. Fried shrimp spring rolls and an order of Bahn Xeo to split between
the three of us. I ordered another "lemonade string drink" (also known as mostly passionfruit with lemon at the bottom) while Bob and Shirley just had water.
Fried Shrimp + Green Onion in a fine noodle/fried wrapper
Bahn Xeo base (veggie w/mushrooms) and the platter of add-ins to build a full Bahn Xeo with the rice paper wrappers between the plates...
Here are some still leading up to eating a "built" Bahn Xeo roll:
The base Bahn Xeo (has veggies + mushroom inside)
Add sliced green papaya
All the fixings...
Take rice paper and put a Bahn Xeo (opened up here) on it.
Add Basil (or is it Holy Basil?)
Add cucumbers...
And Onions...
ANd sliced green mango?
Wrap as best you can in the rice paper & dip in fish sauce
And eat!
After lunch we headed back to the apartment for a much needed nap before heading out for our evening dinner experience at "Nen Restaurant". For those who are interested as why I deserved a nap at all... Shirley figured out that my morning walks added up to about 5 miles. NEED A NAP!
Unfortunately something that I ate upset my stomach so we ended up doing an abort on our fancy dinner and rescheduling it for tomorrow night in the hopes that I get over the upset quickly.
(good news! I did! )
