Time again for a trip to Asia for more eating! This time I'm just going to focus on the food -- well, I always focus on the food, but I'm not going to bother posting much about the lodging and walking in between meals.
First stop: Return to Tokyo!
First Meal: Breakfast at the "old" tsukiji outer market.
Found a sashimi-don stand with 5 bar chairs on the street facing a little roll-up stand and had a wonderful breakfast of a rice bowl filled with
rice, chopped up fresh tuna and large strips of fresh conger eel. Also came with some miso soup and hot tea.
After my initial breakfast I needed a pallet cleanser so I had a nice matcha ice cream cone!
With a bit more walking it was, of course, time for some sushi. I popped into one of the three
sushizanmi outlets in the area and grabbed two pieces of fatty tuna and a piece of kampachi.
The "guy" in the photo is a statue that they have in from of all of his restaurants!
Spent some time walking around -- even went and saw a short kabuki theater performance for an hour. When I left it was raining so I went down the stairs into the subway system and got myself over to Tokyo station (all underground to stay dry). Walked quite a distance inside that station to find "Ramen Street" in the underground restaurant section of the station. Waited in a long line about 40 minutes at one of the more popular stands to get an authentic soba noodle lunch with many "salarymen". Lots of noodle slurping! I was only able to finish about 3/4 of it, but it was quite good. I ordered the basic dish along with an extra of a soft boiled egg.
After lunch I made it back to the subway near Tsjuiki and braved the rain (lighter than before)
to head to my hotel. On the way, since I still had a little time to wait before they were doing checkin's, I had another green tea matcha ice-cream cone at a different little shop.
After checking in, a hot shower and a nap it was time to head out to dinner.
Still al little drizzle out so I decided to just to back to sushizanmi, though a slightly different outlet than the one I had eaten at during breakfast, for a flight of tuna (from 'regular' to 'fatty'), a tempura fried shrimp (head and all) and some additional amazing eel and some green tea ice cream.
