Got up early and finished off uploading yesterdays foodie pictures to the web site.
At 6:10am I headed out to the station to go back to Central and walk to "Yuk Yu Tea House", an expensive but traditional Dim Sum restaurant that I found on a number of different web site write-ups about Hong Kong.
No problem getting there as I was early and there were only a few other people ahead of me.
Here's what the front door looked like, although they directed me through a side door up to the second floor instead of keeping me at the ground level.
The ladies kept on coming by carrying either trays or "cigar tray"'s of dim sum, so I got right into it!
Here's what the inside of the restaurant looked like
First up was an order of some kind of bones with a little meat that had stewed for along time. Hard to eat them as you had to balance them with chopsticks and try to tear little bits of meat off
before putting the remainder into your mouth and "sucking" the rest off. Bones got tossed back into the bowl. Despite being hard to eat it was a very savory dish and I enjoyed it! They also put a few
very small "balls" of white dough on top (like steamed char siu bun material) that I used to 'soak up' the drippings and finish them off once I'd finished eating the meat.
Next up were a variant of sesame balls -- same on the outside as Jin Dui, but instead of the bean curd filling it was something else.
Still guessing as to what it was exactly but it had a nutty component. Tasted good, but hard for me to place. I ate one and took the other home
as I knew it would keep in my fridge at the hotel.
Got a standard order of Har Gow (shrimp dumplings). Good quality--
And also an order of some type of pork-eggroll type dish, also good. I took one home as again it would keep in my fridge.
And I also got an order of something made with chicken - hard to describe as it was a combo of chicken and some sort of glutenous covering.
Not bad, but different from what I've had before.
I was really quite full, so I called it quits and headed back to the hotel. On a lark I stopped by the coffee shop near the elevators where yesterday I was told that
they would out of their famous Macau Egg Tarts until Monday. They were wrong! They had them back in stock, so I bought two and brought them up to the room to eat while
entering all of the above onto the web. Technically they only lasted about 2 minutes though as they were small (about 2-2.5" in diameter and VERY good!).
Nicely brulee'd on the top, wiggly custard in the middle and flakey dough all around. Yum!!
Now its 8:45am and I think it is time for a NAP!
Got up around 10:30 and headed out around 11:00am for lunch a "Mao's Roast Meats" where I intend to get a mixed late of goose and pork for lunch.
As expected there was a line waiting outside when I arrived, but it moved fairly quickly and I was seated and able to order (the menu was double sided, with
the back side in english) so not a problem.
The roasted meats were good but unfortunately disaster (for me) struck and I started to fill ill and had to leave (got the rest of my
plate put in a take out box).
Got back to the hotel and went into recovery mode for what I'll just refer to as an "upper stomach bug". Wasn't really able to eat or drink the rest of the day, but such things happen.
I suspect it was more likely the morning Dim Sum than the lunch meal that did it to me -- usually these things are not that instant. In any case, a slight reduction in postings
for Hong Kong will now occur while I get myself back to normal. :-(
